Winona, MN August 2, 2013 – The Winona Area Composites Consortium, The 7 Rivers Alliance and The Winona State University Alumni Office offer you the opportunity to participate in the 11th Annual WSU-Miller Brothers School of Engineering Scholarship Golf Outing.  This worthwhile event for composite professionals takes place September 12, 2013 at the beautiful Cedar Valley Golf Course in Winona, Minnesota.  The Industry for the Advancement of WSU Composite Materials Engineering Fund, the organizing committee of this year’s scholarship golf benefit, has decided to dedicate this year’s scholarship golf tournament to Mr. Stanley P. Prosen.

Lunch will be available at 12:00 followed by a 1:00 PM Shotgun start. A social hour will begin at 5:00 PM and dinner will be served at 6:00 PM. A short program calling attention to the many contributions of Stan Prosen will be followed by door prizes and golfing awards.

Entry fee is $600 per foursome and is limited to 36 foursomes. The scramble format will feature prizes for team places and there will be numerous on-course hole events. There are opportunities for individuals to be connected into foursomes as well. Entry includes carts, green fees, lunches and dinners. For those unable to play, a Social Hour//Dinner only option is available for $40. For golf reservations, contact the WSU Foundation, 1-800-342-5978 ext. 5027, email alumni@winona.edu or register online at www.alumni.winona.edu. Click on the Engineering Scholarship Golf Outing.

The scholarship fund was created to assist students pursuing their degree in Composite Materials Engineering at Winona State University. This program continues to be the only undergraduate engineering program in the country dedicated to the study of composite materials. With his passing last year, the committee felt it appropriate that Stan Prosen be recognized for his scientific and entrepreneurial contributions to the composites industry.

About Stan Prosen

Working at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Springs, Md, Stan was one of the first to combine a recent invention, carbon fiber, with epoxy resins and thermoplastics. He helped spawn a new industry and his talents led him to relocate to Winona Minnesota where early plastics pioneer firm Fiberite would take composite materials manufacturing to a new level. Stan became a technical and entrepreneurial cornerstone of the composites industry in SE Minnesota helping found and grow numerous companies that applied the advantages of composites to existing raw material and end product markets. Stan had 40 publications, eight patents, and four ASTM Standards to his credit. In 1987, the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Processes Engineering (SAMPE) honored Stan’s contributions to the composites industry by electing him SAMPE Fellow. Stan was one of the technical forces behind Winona State University creating the Composite Materials Engineering program and was instrumental in convincing the Governor and politicians of the day to fund the program and a new building to house it. His final legacy was co-founding Coda Composites and bringing composite materials to the world of music. He helped create a new standard for stringed instrument bows and they are now used the world over by Concertmasters down to music students.

The three sponsors proudly bring together professionals from throughout the nation, playing golf in support of the Composite Materials Engineering students at Winona State University. Proceeds will fund engineering scholarships at the Miller Brothers School of Engineering within WinonaStateUniversity.

For plastics / composites companies and suppliers there are numerous promotional opportunities including team sponsorships, promotional gift bags, door prizes and tee box advertising sponsorships. This is a prime opportunity to get yourself or your name in front of influential composites industry professionals, suppliers, educators and even future employees. Donations-in-kind toward student scholarships are also gratefully accepted. For event or donation information contact Laura Miller 507-474-5372 or lmiller@rtpcompany.com

For more than 20 years, WinonaStateUniversity has been educating and graduating students from the only undergraduate engineering program in the United   States devoted to the study of composite materials. Since 1947, when Ben and Rudy Miller began mixing high-quality cotton fibers with plastic resins, composites material engineering has been a recognized knowledge cluster in Southeastern Minnesota. The Miller Brothers early development efforts inspired numerous companies and spin-offs, building on their successes. The WSU-Miller Brothers School of Engineering boasts about their graduates now applying their acquired knowledge throughout North America and around the globe.
