Lewiston, MN May 24, 2016 – PlastiCert, celebrating 35 years of innovative and quality plastic injection molding design and manufacturing services, is honored to be awarded the 2016 When Work Works Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility at the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Appreciation Awards Banquet.
“PlastiCert is honored to have been selected again. Winning our first When Work Works award in 2014, we still learned a great deal about ourselves and implemented additional improvements based on the national results we were provided,” remarked Craig Porter, President and Owner of PlastiCert. “We were confident the improvements we made would help keep us at the forefront of progressive companies. Our co-workers are the key to making us a great manufacturing service organization. Recognizing that their focus can shift between work and home, and being able to help them navigate that, makes the organization all the more resilient and effective.”
Presented by The Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the 2016 When Work Works Award recognizes 351 employers across the United States. PlastiCert has distinguished itself as a leading employer of choice by demonstrating success in using flexibility as part of an effective workplace strategy to achieve business goals and benefit employees by helping them meet their responsibilities on and off the job. http://www.whenworkworks.org/about-us/news-press/2016-when-work-works-award-winners-announced
The award is the result of a rigorous assessment. PlastiCert needed to first qualify by ranking in the top 20 percent of the country based on a nationally representative sample of employers. Two-thirds of the evaluation of applicants comes from a confidential employee survey. Applicants are evaluated on six research-based ingredients of an effective workplace. They are: opportunities for learning; a culture of trust; work/life fit; supervisor support for work success; autonomy; and satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement — all factors associated with employee health, well-being and engagement.
Of the recipients nationally, very few are manufacturing companies. After their first When Work Works award, PlastiCert participated in a collaboration with a handful of other manufacturing oriented winners to develop and guide on achieving workplace flexibility in manufacturing. http://www.whenworkworks.org/be-effective/guides-tools/workflex-guides#manufacturing . Upon its release, PlastiCert participated in a panel discussion at SHRM’s 2015 Annual Convention in Las Vegas.
“As with our last winning application, management answers questions to try and get their organization through the first level of screening and become a finalist,” said Porter. “The most telling aspect is that our co-workers are provided surveys that they answer anonymously for the Family & Work Institute selection committee to review. Combine that with being a small manufacturer and a lean workforce and we are truly proud of what we have put together at PlastiCert.”
An initiative of Families and Work Institute (FWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the When Work Works Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility are part of a national project to educate the business community on the value of workplace effectiveness and flexibility.
“These employers have excelled at creating effective workplaces yielding tremendously positive results for business success, as well as for their employees’ well-being and productivity,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of FWI. “Effective workplaces recognize that employees are an organization’s greatest resource and make a critical difference in the organization’s ability to not only survive, but to thrive.”
