A weekend of charity and international flair!

This weekend kicks off with the Annual Lewiston Fools Five Road Race Benefit Auction Friday evening. Prior to over a thousand people racing on Sunday, everyone sits down and bids on hundreds of items to raise money for cancer research. After bidding on 150 items raising money for local beneficiaries, an additional 200 items to raise money for regional hospitals and research institutions will be auctioned. The auctioneer’s voice will carry on into the night, historically past midnight as locals and visitors donate very generously and then bid even more generously.

Into the weekend, you can satiate your desires by visiting the Winona Polish Cultural Institute and Museum for an Artisan Fair. Browse the area’s finest handcrafted creations: Pottery, jewelry, soap, knitted items, stained glass, kids’ stuff, garden art, and more! If your soul needs a little propping, you can take in “A Night in Havana:” an SMU Jazz Concert at the Performance Center at Saint Mary’s University. Jazz studies director A. Eric Heukeshoven and the talented student jazz musicians will perform music written and inspired by Cuban composers following his trip to Cuba this past winter. If the other side of the Atlantic is more to your liking, come listen to Scots Gaelic Song & Pipe Music at the Historic Masonic Theatre in Winona. Scotland’s Western Isles have preserved a wealth of traditional Scots Gaelic songs, as well as music for the pipes. This new duo combines these two ancient musical traditions, with forays into related music. Vocalist Jennifer Licko, who also plays guitar, keyboards, bodhran and dances, has been studying and performing Scots Gaelic song for the past 15 years. She is joined by Dick Hensold on pipes and whistle.

So as always, you can just hunker down to try and recover from your long week, or you can get out and refresh with the offerings of your friends and neighbors. Whichever you choose, ENJOY!
