PlastiCert acquires new sinker EDM
Lewiston, MN July19, 2019 – PlastiCert, a veteran of innovative and quality plastic injection molding design and manufacturing services for nearly 40 years, announces that they have recently acquired a new Mitsubishi Sinker EDM.
PlastiCert’s new Mitsubishi EA28V-Advance Sinker EDM was delivered and installed July 19.
What it is:
A Sinker EDM utilizes a means of cutting metal called Electrical discharge machining (EDM), also known as spark machining. It is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is obtained by using electrical discharges (sparks). Material is removed from the steel mold by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges between the electrode and the mold, separated by a dielectric liquid and subject to an electric voltage. The process depends upon the tool and work piece not making actual contact.
When the voltage between the two is increased, the intensity of the electric field in the volume between the electrodes becomes greater than the strength of the dielectric (at least in some places), which breaks down, allowing current to flow. As a result, steel is removed from the mold surface.

“Since adoption of our plan, we have dispersed over $500,000 dollars, previously adding two new injection molding presses, a new machining center in the mold shop and a custom coil winder”, remarked Craig W. Porter President and Owner. Coordinating additional injection molding presses and accessory equipment acquisitions along with a 7,500 foot expansion of the plant will allow for a number of efficiency and economy projects to take place he noted. “Since acquiring the company, my plan was to get operations squared away and improve our financials. Having accomplished those goals, it is time to take action that reinforces our reputation and position as a highly capable mold design, mold build and molder of engineered composites components for small and medium volume programs”, Porter exclaimed.
PlastiCert, founded in 1981, is a privately held corporation with headquarters and manufacturing in Lewiston Minnesota. Initially a custom molder targeted at the electronics industry, today PlastiCert is a one-stop shop for OEMs desiring small and medium volume, complex, engineered resin parts for telecom, industrial, computer, avionics, medical markets and more. PlastiCert provides both mold development/build and custom plastic injection molding; including insert molding and over molding. Also available are a compliment of value add capabilities including decorating and electro-mechanical assembly.
