PlastiCert President/Owner speaks to Career Class
Lewiston, MN December 20, 2017 – PlastiCert, a 36 year veteran of innovative and quality plastic injection molding design and manufacturing services, was asked to come and discuss manufacturing careers at Lewiston-Altura High School.
PlastiCert President/Owner Craig Porter was asked to speak with a Career Preparation Class at Lewiston-Altura High School about his education, experiences and about career opportunities in the manufacturing sector. He covered historical trends in manufacturing employment since the 1940’s until present day. Discussed and shared videos contrasting the production floor of the 40’s to the highly technical and robot oriented production floor of today. The need for more technical knowledge than labor and also all of the non-technical opportunities in manufacturing not usually thought about, like Purchasing, Production Control, and Materials Management. He referenced their current academics and planning for their future by taking advantages of the opportunities they will see in High School. He stressed what qualities employers will be looking for in them as potential hires, like dependability, timeliness, ability to work in groups and problem solving skills.
“It is a great opportunity to convey what manufacturing has to offer,” remarked Porter. “Showing them some of the statistics about hire average pay in manufacturing careers than all other industries combined, the large effect manufacturing alone has on the country’s GDP and overall economy, and the myriad of products being produced”. We talked about continuous learning and that education and experience equals options. The more depth to their skill set, the more opportunities they can take advantage of
He also emphasized that math and science course are not just about learning math and science but are the foundation of learning to problem solve, something every employer, in this day and age, expects of their employees to contribute to the company. He set up the link to realizing that teachers are not just imparting subject knowledge, but life skills by issuing deadlines, establishing team work groups, and expecting consistency.
