Non-metro working, it works better!
College students love non-metro universities. Sitting on an advisory board, I hear and read about them falling in love with the area and campus in choosing to attend . Yet, come graduation time, they all want to head for the big city where opportunities, money and nightlife abound.
That being said, we see an increasing number of frustrated job seekers on LinkedIn. Numerous resume’ submissions, lack of call backs, unfruitful interviews are all common posts. I am willing to bet, most of those are in a metro environment.
Thirty years ago, our CEO was approached about relocating from the metro, two hours southeast to a college town of 25,000. At that time, the hang-up was about what ifs. What if that opportunity doesn’t work out? Where else will we find new careers? From the LinkedIn threads I am seeing, those issues are hitting metro workers head on.
Here in the non-metro, life is grand. Opportunities abound and we value our people, up and down the entire company organizational chart. In fact, we need more people, and we offer a magnificent work AND life environment. Easy commutes, easy access to home during the workday, and after work activities city folk dream about and sit in stop and go traffic trying to leave to access.
In Minnesota for example, there are some 8,000 small manufacturing companies, many looking for talent. They reside in quality communities from North to South, East to West. The best part is, we still come to the metro, for professional sports, theater and art. Get in and get out, taking advantage without enduring the rat race during the day.
Yet, the non-metro has those things as well. In our area alone we have minor league sports. We have race tracks (long gone anywhere near a metro). We have quality golf, hiking, trout fishing, and biking (road and mountain). We also have arts, classical music, contemporary music AND entertainment and theater! We see performers from all over the country and all over the world. Artists like Monet, Picasso, and more. Musicians like Joshua Bell and YoYo Ma.
The best part is, non-metro careers are typically long lasting, fulfilling and yet not overbearing! Non-metro business owners are here for reason, they like the lifestyle as well!
