What is injection molding reshoring?
Injection molding reshoring moves the manufacture of molded components from an overseas supplier to a domestic U.S. manufacturing partner. The project may involve transferring an existing mold, rebuilding or modifying tooling, reconciling incomplete records and validating a new production process.
The potential business case may include supply-chain distance, response time, communication, inventory strategy, quality support and access to the mold. The priorities and economics are different for every program and should be evaluated with the customer’s sourcing, engineering and quality teams.
When should an OEM consider reshoring?
A domestic option deserves evaluation when the existing supply model creates operational or technical risk.

PlastiCert uses a structured transfer and engineering review to identify what is known, what needs verification and what work may be required. Not every mold can be placed directly into production, and not every tool can be economically recovered. The purpose of the evaluation is to give the customer a clearer basis for deciding what comes next.
PlastiCert’s reshoring process
The sequence is adapted to the program, but the core objective is controlled transition rather than assumption.
1. Review the business and technical requirements
We begin with the part, annual demand, release pattern, material, quality expectations, current supply concern and the records available from the overseas source.
2. Plan the mold transfer and intake
The customer and PlastiCert align on mold ownership, available components, shipping responsibilities and the information needed for evaluation. The tool is documented when it arrives.
3. Inspect the mold and rebuild understanding
Our mold transfer team evaluates tool condition and compares it with drawings, samples and known issues. Reverse engineering and DFM support may be used when records are incomplete or conflicting.
4. Repair, sample and validate
Authorized tool work can be supported through PlastiCert’s in-house tool shop. Controlled sampling and inspection then establish whether the component and process meet the customer’s agreed requirements before recurring production.

Can an overseas injection mold be moved directly into U.S. production?
Sometimes, but it should not be assumed. The mold should be documented and evaluated for condition, compatibility, safety, maintenance needs and its ability to produce the agreed component before routine production.
What information helps PlastiCert evaluate a reshoring project?
Useful information includes drawings, CAD data, material specifications, mold records, recent samples, quality history, annual demand, release quantities and a description of current supply concerns. PlastiCert can identify missing information during the initial review.
Can PlastiCert repair or modify the transferred mold?
PlastiCert has an in-house tool shop that can support authorized mold maintenance, repair and modification. Recommendations are based on the tool evaluation; PlastiCert does not assume that every mold can or should be repaired.
How can reshoring affect lead time and quality?
Domestic production can shorten the physical supply chain and give the customer more direct access to the manufacturing team. Actual lead-time and quality results depend on the specific part, tool, process, material and supply plan and must be validated for the program.
