It’s nice to see Big Business coming around
A big story this week was the two-page ad in the WSJ, signed by 181 Business Roundtable CEO members, representing retail, industrial, transportation, service, and finance; changing their Business Roundtable’s statement of “the purpose of a corporation”.
Since 1997 the purpose was to serve their shareholders, period.
Now they have seen the light. Realizing their success is based on both inward interests, like employees and ethical practices; as well as outward dealings, like suppliers and their surrounding communities.
They have switched from a short term immediate profits vision to a long term investment and returns vision.
Welcome to the club.
At PlastiCert, almost 10 years ago we rewrote our mission statement affirming what we have practiced all along. We are a customer service provider, but we include our people and the community around us as key to our success. We’ve always recognized that, to be successful, we need to rely on and be respectful of the people, suppliers and the community that helps us to put together a successful effort.
Glad to see we are all getting on the same page.
But taking out an ad and signing it is a far cry from reprogramming millions of employees to focus on more than making a buck at everyone else’s peril. I believe Walking the Walk is how the consultants phrase it. Time will tell if that transition takes hold.
I too have always and still believe in the free market system. But a system with a conscience, where your business dealings address the interconnected nature of society.
