PlastiCert contributes to high school supermileage competition team
Lewiston, MN February 25, 2020 – PlastiCert, PlastiCert, a veteran of innovative and quality plastic injection molding design and manufacturing services for nearly 40 years, recently donated funds and an offer for assistance to the Lewiston-Altura High School Supermileage project.
PlastiCert again provided support for the Lewiston-Altura High School, Project Lead the Way students in their effort to improve on their Supermileage car designs. PlastiCert has supported the program since its first request 6 years ago.
In its 32nd year, the Minnesota Technology and Engineering Educators Association sponsored Supermileage competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. The vehicles are powered by a small standardized four-cycle engine that Briggs & Stratton provides at a heavily discounted price. The vehicles will run a specified course with the vehicle obtaining the highest combined kilometers per liter (miles per gallon) rating plus design segment points winning the event. Students have the opportunity to set a world fuel economy record and increase public awareness of fuel economy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ToegdL5mp8&feature=youtu.be
“We are happy that we can be of assistance to these early engineering students,” commented Craig Porter, President and Owner of PlastiCert. “The lessons they will learn, not just about engineering but about team work, research, problem solving and collaboration are worth every penny. These are exactly the skill sets we are looking for in the people we hire at PlastiCert! From an entry level operator to our engineers, even our office and production support staff, solving problems collaboratively throughout the company is how we continuously improve and stay competitive. ” Joel Ellinghuysen, Industrial Ed teacher and Project Lead The Way instructor sent word, “I just wanted to personally thank PlastiCert for your continued support of the Supermileage Team with your generous sponsorship and also for your continuous support of the technology / engineering department at LAHS! Thank you again!”
About the MTEEA Supermileage Program
The objective of the competition is to provide Career Technical Education students and MTEEA Clubs with a challenging project that allows practical experience in design, fabrication, and testing. This is exactly what the STANDARDS FOR TECHNOLOGICAL LITERACY from the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association are all about!
In an effort to increase support for and promotion of Technology Education, public awareness in the area of fuel economy and student involvement, MTEEA will hold the Supermileage Challenge, a fuel economy competition for technology students every spring. Competing students and clubs will be challenged to build a one-person, fuel-efficient vehicle powered by a single cylinder four-stroke cycle engine. The 32nd annual competition will feature vehicles competing in Stock, Modified, E-85, Urban Concept and Plug in Electric classes.
