PlastiCert President/Owner participates in Senator’s Workforce Issues Roundtable.
Lewiston, MN June 7, 2017 – PlastiCert, a 36 year veteran of innovative and quality plastic injection molding design and manufacturing services, recently saw it’s President/Owner participate on a roundtable organized by MN Senator Amy Klobuchar .
On Wednesday, June 7, Senator Klobuchar organized a Workforce Roundtable held at Winona’s MSC Southeast campus. Participants on the roundtable included a dozen representatives from manufacturing, workforce development, economic development, banking, and education.
The Senator was looking for input on workforce issues prevalent in Southern MN. While availability of workforce was certainly discussed, issues also involved skills training, housing, child care, transportation and future workforce development.
PlastiCert President and Owner Craig Porter used examples of activity with the local high schools and middle schools both at the schools, and within his facility. “I was able to highlight that while enlightening students from 8th grade through seniors about career opportunities in manufacturing, it’s their parents that also have to be brought on board,” said Porter. “While nationwide only 9% of the workforce is in manufacturing, even our nearly 16 percent locally means over 80% of the parents in the area also have no knowledge of the manufacturing careers available and therefore are misinformed when guiding their children.” Porter told them, “as you’re driving to your next regional metro meeting location, pull off the freeway and drive through the 1,000 person towns. Look at what Main Street looks like, envision the lack of child care, housing and transportation and how it limits these towns’ ability to survive.”
